Sami Reindeer Camp Dinner & Sledding

4 hours and 30 minutes

Easy

A fun trip from Tromsø with reindeer sledding and feeding, Sami stories and traditional dinner
Evening reindeer sledding and feeding under the Northern Lights

Get ready for a once-in-a-lifetime experience! Imagine going on a reindeer sled tour while admiring the beautiful Northern Lights dancing above your head! The activity takes place at a reindeer camp owned by a traditional Sami reindeer herding family, which is a 30-minute drive north of Tromsø. Around 300 reindeer live at the camp! The guides will harness some reindeer to the sleigh and off you go for a fun 15 to 20-minute sledding ride around the valley*. The location of the camp is ideal to observe the aurora borealis. If the sky is clear enough, you might be able to see them. However, please note that this reindeer tour is not a Northern Lights trip so we cannot guarantee you will see the Northern Lights (it’s up to Mother Nature!). After your sledding trip, you will get to feed the reindeer.

A delicious three-course dinner

Warm up around the fire inside the candlelit gamme (traditional Sami hut) and have some hot drinks before we serve you a three-course dinner. The dinner menu is cold smoked salmon salad, bidos** (traditional reindeer stew, which is often served at Sami weddings) with Sami bread and a chocolate cake with blueberries.

Learn more about Sami culture

After dinner, you will gather around the fire in a lavvu (Sami herdsmen’s tent). Listen to your Sami guide explaining what is like to be a reindeer herder and then performing a joik (traditional Sami song).

* The sledding ride is subject to snow conditions. (If there is not enough snow, we offer “Sami Reindeer Camp Dinner with Chance of Northern Lights” instead.)
